Today(1st September)

What is special Today?

70 years ago, on September 1, 1947, The Indian Standard Time[IST] i.e. 82° 30' E was introduced as the official time for the whole country.
The 82° 30' E passes through the clock tower in Mirzapur near Allahbad, Uttar Pradesh and is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of the Greenwich mean time.

Story in Detail

Initially , the time was calculated by astrology and sundials located on top of Jantar Mantar(in the 1770s).
During the British rule, Bombay and Kolkata were the important presidencies and had two time zones established as Kolkata with 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT, and Mumbai at 4 hours 51 minutes ahead.
Later in 1905, the meridian passing east of Allahabad was picked as a standard time zone for the country, eventually being declared IST in 1947.
